Food trends that will emerge and fade away in 2022
Just as fashion trends come and go, so do food trends. Many of the expected food trends of 2022 will be impacted or inspired by post pandemic era and social media landscape.
The upcoming year 2022 will be more about ‘zero waste’, ‘less meat and alcohol’. There will be a rising demand for environment-friendly foods.
Below are some of the food trends I think will be new or grow in popularity in 2022:
Less Alcohol:
Many who have fallen off the fitness wagon during the pandemic will practice mindful eating and drinking again.
So, in 2022, I expect to see people drinking less booze and more of herbal teas. In the past 1 year or so, there has been a growth in the herbal teas market due to low immunity and after-effects of COVID.
Therefore, people will take the herbal tea route to relieve stress & anxiety, improve sleep and boost immunity.
The IWSR (the leading source of data, analysis and insights on the global beverage alcohol market) predicts that sales of no/low alcoholic beverages will increase by 31 percent in volume by 2024. ( https://www.theiwsr.com/)
Dining Out Will Be Even More of an Experience:
Now that many restaurants have reopened their doors and are getting used to pandemic-related precautions, they’re going all out to make up for lost time.
I believe dining experiences as a whole will become more transformational. Like restaurants that transition guests to new spaces throughout each part of the meal, differing music tempos to accompany each course and more.
Watch for themed menus, creative settings, beverage brand partners, branded decor, cooking classes, prix-fixe menus.
Reducetarianism
Plant-based chicken is everywhere. Given the volatility of animal protein prices and real chicken shortage, it’s time to go for meat-free nuggets and tenders.
For some people that are plant-curious but not ready to ditch meat entirely, there will be a rise in reducetarianism.
“Reducetarianism” describes people who are not vegetarian or vegan, but are aiming to eat less meat, dairy, and eggs mainly for environmental reasons.
This diet is all about reducing the impact we have on the planet by being more mindful of the types of foods we are eating. Briefly, that means limiting our consumption of meat, eggs and dairy (without restricting them entirely) and opting for pasture-raised and grass-fed whenever possible. This will grow in popularity in 2022.
Spice Up Your Life:
Spices and peppers of all kinds will be popular in 2022. There will be a love affair with spicy condiments from cuisines around the world especially for people that want something extra on their menus.
Perhaps the most notable of 2021 was chili crisp — oil infused with crunchy bits of peppers, onions or scallions, garlic and other aromatics. We will continue to see fiery global condiments grow in popularity.
To-Go and Takeout Aren’t Going Anywhere:
Restaurant visits are on the rise and getting more vibrant but delivery and pick-up options will continue as a food trend in 2022.
More than seven in 10 Americans now order food from restaurants directly, according to an April 2021 study by The Harris Poll.
During the pandemic, restaurants got more creative with their offerings and adopted new technologies to make ordering seamless for their customers. In addition, higher-end restaurants that were previously dine-in only began offering takeout or delivery meals and special packages. This trend will continue for the busy class.
Immunity-Boosting Foods Are All the Rage:
It is only natural that we are all a little more focused on maintaining a strong immune system. In addition, with COVID-19 variants popping up on the daily, I expect to see that healthy mindset continue in 2022, specifically through food.
Immunity-boosting foods (like probiotic foods and non-starchy vegetables) are one of the top trends for the coming year, as “consumers balance the comfort foods they demanded during the pandemic to refocus on better-for-you options.
Hibiscus Is Happening:
Hibiscus has a long and delicious history in the world of teas, and customers have historically kept it in their rotations for its vitamin C content. This will grow in 2022. Now, producers are harnessing its sweet, tart flavor in the form of fruit spreads, yogurts and beyond.
Ghost kitchens:
A ghost kitchen is a restaurant kitchen set up to cook and prepare food only for delivery, meaning you can’t just walk in and take a seat, and you can’t pick up either. This will become more popular in 2022 among those that busy and do not mind their food being delivered.
More robots servers:
In 2022, there will be a surge of robots and automation in the dining industry. While the concept is not new, the notable acceleration results from labor shortages due to workers becoming fed up with working conditions, continuously inadequate wages, and contactless dining as a social distancing measure.
Robots bring automation to the dining experience, which could result in a faster and more consistent product.
2) What current food trend(s) will fade away in 2022 because people are sick of it?
Why do you think this food trend will fade away in 2022?
I watch a lot of cooking content online and I think there are some food trends that are becoming completely overdone because people are sick of it. 2021 was a delicious year, but there are some food phenomena we can live without in 2022.
Super-Sized Desserts:
This is just extra. We need to be teaching people how to stay safe and healthy, not how to eat until you feel sick. This one will fade away because it is not healthy and people will be more health conscious come 2022.
Sloppy brurgers:
People love a good burger, but do not want to eat a burger with 5 patties, 6 cheese sticks, half a pound of bacon, onions rings then smothered in cheese sauce. This makes it look so “uninteresting and uninviting” They are sick of it and it is going off in 2022.
Gold covered food:
It does not look appetizing and all of it is way overpriced because it looks expensive. It adds nothing to the dish but price. Food needs to have some sort of nutritional value and not some gold coloring everywhere! People are sick of it and it is going off in 2022.
Rainbow/mermaid/unicorn food:
While unicorns are beautiful and magical, people do not want to be eating that. I am still not sure if all the sparkles, sprinkles, bursts of colors, and glitter are as appetizing as they look. Food coloring in everything just made no sense and makes your food taste like chemicals!
It is excessively much and a bit complex and 2022 is for simple food.
Turning Sushi into Absolutely Everything
Why ruin perfectly good sushi? Whether its sushi pizza, sandwiches, burritos, donuts, or whatever else they have done to sushi lately, just let it be already. It is excessively much and a bit complex and 2022 is for simple food.
